Forty-one students spent their winter and spring breaks volunteering with University at Buffalo Alternative Break - an experience that allowed them to directly serve and learn about different communities. "Alternative Break lets UB students volunteer and have unique learning opportunities during their winter or spring break," Rachel DiDomizio, UB associate director of community and civic engagement, says. "By spending time immersed in a new community, students learn about their role as a global citizen, make new friends and connections and discover how they can become an agent of change." Students volunteered in Puerto Rico to learn about community resilience and advocacy; Philadelphia to explore civic engagement; Portland, Oregon, to study food insecurity; and Buffalo to examine refugee resettlement.
